The Wildcats hosted Elkhart Christian Saturday as part of the Founders Day celebration and did not disappoint the home crowd with a gutsy 40-22 victory. Simon Holzer led Howe with 135 punishing yards rushing and four touchdowns to go along with eight solo tackles.
Howe took an early 8-0 lead on Holzer’s two-yard run to cap the Wildcats’ first drive. LeMarcus Bickley glided in from 14 yards in the second quarter to put Howe ahead 14-8. Denim Matchett rushed for the first of his three PAT conversions following the score, to make it 16-8. Elkhart Christian capitalized on an interception deep in Howe territory and drove to tie the score just before the half.
Following an hour-plus severe weather delay, the Eagles put up the first score of the second half, but the Wildcats defense dug in and gave its offense a chance to come back. Howe cranked out 24 points in the final quarter to seal the victory. Holzer scored three of his four touchdowns on runs of two, 23, and five yards.
A solid team effort secured the win with Davie Holliday, Dylan Naughton, and Evan Schubert leading the way for Holzer by throwing key blocks. Holliday added five solo tackles from his defensive end position. Jackson Jolicoeur added five solos and kept the team in the game during the extended half-time with his leadership as captain. Weston Tucker, Eli Schaap, DeAndre Herron and Wes Mykrantz helped keep a pass-happy Eagle offense in check in the second half, and Simon Williams and Ryan Schubert made some big tackles down the stretch for the Wildcats.
The team travels to Calumet on Saturday.
